Southern Baptists are focusing on families and evangelism as they prepare for their annual meeting this week in Phoenix. Thousands of Southern Baptists are heading to Arizona for the annual gathering of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), The theme of this year's meeting is "Kingdom First -- Exalt the King, Expand His Kingdom." The theme is based on Matthew 6:33, which says Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you. Dr. Bill Merrill, the SBC's vice president for convention relations, says the meeting will examine ways to strengthen the family. In recent years, Southern Baptists have been criticized by liberal denominations and the mainstream media for affirming the traditional, biblical view of marriage, and for refusing to approve the ordination of female pastors. A "Kingdom Family" rally will take place Monday evening in Phoenix. The conference takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
