Gay Bishop Prays At Inauguration

When Pastor Rick Warren was invited by President-elect Barack Obama to give a prayer at his inauguration, gay activists protested.

To counter the criticism, Obama invited the openly homosexual bishop of New Hampshire, Gene Robinson, to pray at the inaugural opening ceremonies at the Lincoln Memorial on the Sunday before the inauguration. Robinson issued a statement expressing his “great honor to be there representing the Episcopal Church, the people of New Hampshire, and all of us in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.”

Conservative activist Gary Bauer said it was an example of Obama “caving” to the special interests that got him elected president. “Robinson claims to be representing the Episcopal Church, but his previous comments betray his true sympathies. He told the New York Times in December that when he first learned of Rick Warren’s invitation to pray at the inauguration, ‘it was like a slap in the face,’ and he called officials on the Obama transition team to ‘share his dismay.’ Here again we see the instinct of homosexual activists to silence the voices of men and women of faith,” Bauer said.

Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, noted, “President-elect Obama says he wants to unite Americans, and yet he chooses the most polarizing person in the Episcopal Church.”
